Discovery

Over the course of two years, our team had collected feedback from clients about our current ID creation tool. Through this feedback, we identified painpoints:

1

High Drop-Off Rate

Users would often get confused or frustrated when using tool, prompting them to abandon designs before finishing.

2

Lack of Design Templates

Current templates all looked similar and did not promote individuality.

3

Printing Issues

Current system offered color options that were not able to be printed successfully.

Ideation & Design

Together, the team mapped out our user journey to identify where clients were most likely to drop-off. After finding that clients felt overwhelmed by the lack of direction, we began designing the new tool. This process involved journey mapping, wireframing, and prototyping.

Members of the team worked with our printing facility to create a color palette. This palette was designed and tested to ensure low color variance in printed product.

Clients were frequently asking to have elements such as barcodes and logos added to our pre-existing templates. In order to cater to each possible combination of elements, I designed 120 different ID card templates.

Ultimately, 81 unique designs were approved and finalized for use within the program:

  • 36 vertical designs

  • 45 horizontal designs

  • 48 designs included option to add functional barcode

  • 36 designs included option to upload logo

  • All designs included option to change color palettes, text, and font

Reflection

Since launching the tool in June 2024, we have seen a dramatic decrease in drop-off rates. We have also seen a decrease in the number of calls and emails from clients about ID design. By changing the color palette and implementing quality assurance tests, we decreased product reprints by 50.67%. This tool has made a major difference for our clients, and continues to receive positive feedback.

Challenges

  • Staying within scope: Each time I began a new design, I imagined a dozen more that could be created.

  • Time constraint: In order to get this tool launched in time for our next client cycle, we had to work diligently to meet deadlines.

  • Formatting change: Towards the end of the project, the developers realized they needed the designs to be in a different format within a different company program. This caused me to have to recreate all 81 designs in a new tool.

Lessons Learned

  • By staying within the scope, I am able to produce cleaner, more meaningful work in a timely manner

  • Time management is key when working on a project with a large amount of deliverables. Balancing my day-to-day tasks on top of this project was difficult at times, but extremely rewarding.

  • Be prepared, but not afraid, of the unexpected. I won’t panic when things arise - I will remain positive and do what I must to get things done.

Looking Forward

  • Potential to increase number of designs offered to clients

  • Continued improvement of UI based on user feedback
